The small, solitary Echidna is one of the weirdest of Australia's native animals. Most of its upper body is covered with 5 cm long spines interspersed with hairs for insulation. An egg laying mammal, it lays a tiny soft egg into its pouch from which a puggle or baby Echidna will emerge in 10 days time. As an Echidnas has no teeth, it will rip open logs with its claws and suck up termites and ants with its 18 cm long tongue.
